How are Australians navigating the fastest rate hikes in history?

Rampant inflation spurred the Reserve Bank of Australia to hike the cash rate from 0.1% to 4.35% between May 2022 and November 2023, and mortgage holders – potentially already struggling – bore the brunt.

That left us wondering, with the plethora of home loans available on the market, how many Australians regret choosing the mortgage they did? Further, how many remain unaware or uninterested in adjusting what’s often the largest expense facing a household – housing costs?

We surveyed 1,049 Australian home loan holders over a two week period spanning November and December 2024, and the results came as a shock.

Key findings:

  • 40% of borrowers don’t know their interest rate
  • Gen Z is leading a shift towards property investment
  • WA and SA borrowers are refinancing at higher rates than those
across the rest of the country
  • Baby Boomers are the most satisfied with their mortgage choices
